In 1600, the city of Turin extended its boundaries to the Porta Nuova (new gate), and in 1861 the first railway station with the same name was built on the same site. This area is now in the heart of the city.
Owing to current changes under way along the city’s new inner-city rail network and the development of new stations, Porta Nuova is slowing losing its usefulness.
This scenario provides the city with a unique occasion to convert Porta Nuova station and the 200,000m2 area comprising platforms and sidings to a new use.
More than 50% of the Earth’s inhabitants now live in cities. But these city-dwellers often dream of living somewhere else - they feel oppressed by urban sprawl and a lack of open spaces they can enjoy.
Turin’s inhabitants, for example, yearn to be near the sea, now at the other end of a long motorway and endless queues.
This project aims at making a collective dream come true by bringing a little sea into the city in the form of a lakeside park where Porta Nuova’s platforms and sidings now stand. It is not too difficult to create: water can be channelled from nearby rivers to fill the lake and thermal baths and pools can be built inside the ex-station to be used in winter.
